Girls Activation Day
Sporting events often evoke thoughts of competition; when you think of a sporting event, the image of schools competing against each other typically comes to mind. But not this one.
On Friday, the 25th of August, Harbour Sports hosted a Girl's Activation Day at the Mahurangi Showgrounds. Schools from our local area came together to explore different sports.
Representing Warkworth School were 25 girls from Year 5 and 6. At the start of the day we were pumped and ready. Our first activity was HUNGER BALL..... none of us knew what this game was. Despite the mystery surrounding it, the anticipation was high. We were all ready to enter the huge, blue and orange inflatable arena that towered above us. Balls were flying, goals were scored, and we quickly learned the rules.
Hips were shaking, bodies moved. Next we danced our hearts out with a hip hop routine. Step after step a stunning dance was formed. Slowly but surely our confidence grew.
The other sports we tried included hockey, cricket, volleyball and touch. Each game brought us a step closer to learning the sport, growing our skills and boosting our confidence.
There was giggling and laughing, and a happy energy was in the air. We all had a great day. The goal of the day was to enable girls to participate in sports, grow their confidence and to have fun. When I looked around, I saw smiling faces, energetic bodies and happy girls. I believe this goal was undoubtedly achieved.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Harbour Sport for organising this day for us.
